The Single Step
This was what I found in my fortune cookie a few weeks ago and I've been pondering this ever since.
What can begin without a first step?
Often times that first step is the hardest because it represents a new birth. It's a stepping away from old habits and into something new. It's a commitment that perhaps we are unsure we can keep. Sometimes we keep that first step a secret for fear of failure.
The beauty in taking that first step is that you've conquered it! You have somehow managed to get started. That step is complete. Waiting just around the corner is a step called consistency.
So here I am at the crossroads of step two. Two days into a thirty day challenge eliminating sugar from my diet.
Throughout the day I've found myself dealing with a myriad of emotions from sadness to loneliness, hopefulness and discouragement. I'm exhausted from the ups and downs of the day.
One glass of sweet tea could make it all go away. That same glass of sweet tea could send me spiraling out of control.
So no tea for me today.
I'm grieving for those familiar habits conveniently disguised as comfort.
It doesn't matter how comfortable you make it, a prison is still a prison.
So tonight I'll fight to keep the door to this prison slightly ajar so that eventually I'll be strong enough to open it all of the way.
Step one is complete and there is a glimmer of light shining through.
"Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders. Let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me. Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander and my faith will be made stronger, in the presence of my Savior." -HillSong "Oceans"
